Ik reed vandaag met de wagen naar Brussel via Doornik. De route is iets langer maar veel rustiger.
Toen ik Doornik passeerde zag ik het bordje L'Escaut.
Dit bord projecteerde Murke terug naar zijn studiejaren in Gent (midden jaren '80). Iedere zondagavond kwamen we samen in café Caruso waar we het weekend bespraken en ons moed indronken om de zware studentenweek door te komen.
P. was ook iedere keer van de partij. En op een bepaalde zondagavond ontstond onderstaand gesprek
Murke : En P., een zwaar weekend gehad ?
P. : Ben met 't lief uitgeweest in Doornik. Ik was er nog nooit geweest maar 't valt best mee : schone stad, toffe cafeetjes ... meer moet dat niet zijn
Murke : en iets speciaals gezien ?
P. : Wel, ik dacht dat ik toch iets van Aardrijkskunde kende maar er loopt een grote rivier door Doornik waar ik nog nooit van gehoord heb
Murke : ????
P. : 't is een brede rivier met de naam L'Escaut. Ik ben nochtans geïnteresseerd in Aardrijkskunde maar deze rivier ken ik niet
Murke : (begint te lachen) P., meen je dat nu
P. : Wat moet ik menen ?
Murke : Wel P. je bent een slimme gast en spreekt meer dan behoorlijk Frans. Dus doet L'Escaut geen belletje rinkelen bij jou ?
P. : Nee
Murke : En loopt de Schelde niet door Doornik
P. : (na lange stilte) ... miljaar, vaneigens en dat ik een ganse zondag aan dienen L'Escaut gedacht heb en op geen moment gepeinsd heb dat dit de Schelde kon zijn. Godverdomme, jullie zullen daar nog lang mee lachen zeker
Murke en Co. : (al lachend) maar nee
